Resources for Learning Fractions

I have written a book about fractions: You Can Do Math: Working With Fractions.

Whether or not you have read my book, here are some other resources, tips, and websites that you may find useful for learning fractions and improving your fractions skills.

Disclosure: In some cases, our company may receive a commission payment if you purchase a product or service after following one of these links.

Anyway, here are the links:

  • Fractions Made Easy

This is another author's (who I understand is an experienced high school math teacher) take on teaching fractions. It's delivered as a downloadable eBook.

This book's been around since 2008, includes a lot of illustrations, and I understand is quite popular. It's also backed by a 60 day money-back guarantee.

Note: There are also a bunch of bonus eBooks on a variety of other topics included with the package, which frankly I wouldn't be interested in. If you like/want them, good for you - but if not, don't let them stop you for considering the main fractions book in the package.

    Fraction Bingo Cards
  • Fraction Bingo Cards

Fractions Bingo is fun learning activity that you can play with your kids.

Here are some free printables for fraction bingo:

Alternatively, you can create your own math bingo cards (or bingo cards for any topic in fact) using the Bingo Card Printer software. There is even a free trial version of this software, which you can try out before deciding if you wish to purchase the full version.

  • Fractions Flash Cards

Flash cards are a proven method for practicing math and arithmetic topics.

This is a nice set of flash cards: bright colors, clear images, and even includes creative ideas for making use of the cards.

  • Fraction Tower Set

This is a set of color coded cubes that can be assembled in different ways. Different sides of the cubes are labelled with fractions, decimals, and percentages. So they provide a brilliant visual and tactile way to build up understanding of fractions and equivalencies. Also included with the set is an Activity Guide with suggested ways of using the cubes to improve students' understanding of fractions.

  • Pizza Fraction Fun

This is a set of board games based around dividing up pizza into pieces, in order to help learn fraction concepts. The games are suitable for 2 to 6 players, in approximately the age range 6 to 12. There are 7 different games that you can play with the set.

  • Math-Aids.Com Fraction Worksheets

Free sets of printable fractions worksheets on a very wide range of topics.

You Can Do Math: Repeating Decimals
  • You Can Do Math: Repeating Decimals

This is book about repeating decimals (also known as "recurring decimals"). It serves as complete introduction to repeating decimals, but assumes familiarity with basic decimals and fractions.

Some of the topics covered within this book include different notation for repeating decimals, unambiguous spoken-English descriptions for repeating decimals, the difference between rational and irrational numbers, the relationships between different types of decimals and rational and irrational numbers, and converting repeating decimals into fractions.
